Delpopolo 5th in Samoa World Cup

November 14, 2011

Samoa World Cup

Apia, Samoa 22 year old Nick Delpopolo traveled half way around the world to compete in the Samoa World Cup. A finalist in last years event, Nick finished just off the podium in 2011 coming in 5th place. After a bye to the second round Delpopolo breezed to the Semi finals defeating local favorite Abner Waterhouse (SAM) and Australian Benjamin Donegan both by ippon. Nick was met in the semi final by 2x World Championships 5th place finisher Sezer Huysuz (TUR). Nick was thrown for ippon at the half way point of the match, Huysuz went on to win the gold medal. In the bronze medal match Nick found himself facing another top competitor in Nugzar Tatalashvili of Georgia. After 5 minutes of regulation time the match had no score and went into Golden Score, with 1:30 remaining in the extra time Nick was thrown for wazari ending his day.

Although he comes home without a medal, 5th place is good enough to receive both World ranking and US National ranking points. Delpopolo remains #1 in the United States and #16 in the World. Next up for Nick will be the China Grand Prix December 17-18th.
