Delpopolo Selected for World Masters

January 2, 2012

Samoa World Cup

For the second consecutive year Burnt Hills High graduate, Nick Delpopolo (22) who trains at the Jason Morris Judo Center (JMJC) in Glenville, NY was invited to compete in the World Masters Championships. The Masters is reserved for the top 16 ranked players in the World in their respective weight class effectively making it only for the “best of the best”. This years Championships will be held in Almaty, Kazakhstan January 14-15, 2012. The tournament boasts the largest cash prizes on the World Judo tour with $6,000 for gold, $4,000 for silver and $2,000 for bronze. The top 4 players in the World will be seeded, however with such high quality competitors, there is no easy draw. Last year Delpopolo went in as the #16 seed at 73kg and drew the #1 player in the world, Ki Chun Wang of Korea, in the first round where he lost by yuko. Wang went on to win the gold medal.

In preparation for this event Delpopolo is in Montreal, Canada with fellow JMJC teammates and coach, Jason Morris for a week long training camp with the Canadian National team. Nick finished 2011 ranked a career high 15th in the World.
