Award-Winning Coach and Intl. Tournament Director Endorses Delpopolo

March 29, 2013

As a long-time Olympic enthusiast and successful wrestling coach, Gebhart Properties CEO Alan Gebhart has dedicated a large part of his life to producing champions on and off the wrestling mats. Gebhart coached at Archbishop Curley High School (Baltimore, MD) for 19 years, 15 of those years as the head coach. Under Gebhart's guidance dozens of Archbishop Curley Wrestlers went on to become tournament champions, state champions and several were High School All Americans.

Some of Gebhart's coaching highlights while at Archbishop Curley include leading the team to 3 team state championships. His Archbishop Curley team enjoyed two undefeated seasons during those three years and were also ranked #1 of all high school wrestling teams in the state of Maryland during that time. Perhaps more impressive was that Gebhart's teams were ranked in the top 10 in the state for over a decade. Gebhart's coaching expertise was recognized statewide when he was named Maryland State Wrestling Association Coach of the Year on three different occasions. He was also named Sunpapers All-Metro Coach of the Year in 1998.

As part of his efforts to boost the overall level of wrestling in the state of Maryland, Gebhart became an international tournament director. He saw great value in bringing international, Olympic-caliber wrestling talent to the Mid-Atlantic area for the first time ever. Gebhart was Director and Chief Sponsor for the 2000 (Washington D.C.) and 2001 (Baltimore, MD) Freestyle Wrestling World Cup. The Freestyle Wrestling World Cup is the third largest event for international Wrestling competition after the Olympics and World Championships. As Tournament Director for the Freestyle Wrestling World Cup in 2000, Gebhart was instrumental in bringing the National Wrestling Teams of Iran and Cuba to the USA. This was the first time that the National Wrestling Teams of Iran and Cuba had ever competed in the United States.

Gebhart and his company are the premiere sponsors of Nick Delpopolo's Road to Rio campaign and Gebhart shared some thoughts on Nick by saying "For the last 20 years I have been proud to be at the Olympic Games supporting the athletes and the Olympic movement. I had the pleasure of meeting with Nick after the London Games over a period of several days and am happy to have the opportunity to assist Nick in his quest for an achievement so far unparalleled among American Male judo players." Gebhart continued saying "I believe that Nick not only has the drive and vision to become the first ever male Olympic Champion for the United States in the sport of Judo, but the humility as well. I fully endorse Nick Delpopolo and encourage others to do the same and help Nick accomplish this significant and most worthwhile goal."
