Nick Delpopolo Breaks into the World Top 5

July 29, 2013

Nick Delpopolo has reached a career high World ranking of #5. Delpopolo's rank is a result of his outstanding performances on the World tour over the past 6 months including winning gold at the Pan American Championships in April.

This rank is important because the IJF will seed the top 8 players at the upcoming World Championships in Rio De Janiero which means they cannot meet each other until the quarter final. The 73kg division is the largest in the World and with over a hundred competitors in his pool at the 2011 World Championships, being seeded can be a major advantage. Nick will be the only American seeded at the Worlds this year.

In a phone call after hearing about his new rank Delpopolo said "Wow I'm really excited to be ranked in the top 5 in the World, I know since April I have been floating between 6 and 8 but reaching that top 5 means a little more to me and I'm excited to think I only have 4 spots to go until I am ranked #1 in the World!" Nick finished his thought by saying "I really want to say that my coach, Evelio Garcia, and my personal team have pushed me hard this year and our goals were to peak for the Pan American Championships and the World Championships and we are right on track. I have been consistently finishing in the final medal table of the Grand Slam and Gran Prix tournaments this year without being at my best... I take confidence from that and will be working hard during the next month to give it my all at the Worlds."
